The athlon package CD will have packages on it compiled with optimizations to take advantage of athlon only instructions (and so wouldn't run on any other processor). The x86 on will have packages that'll run on any x86 processor, but won't be as fast on your computer

(If you want to compile everything yourself you don't need a package CD though)

In other words - it doesn't matter, but it'd be best to get the athlon CD, unless you're planning on installing stuff on another system that has a different type of x86 processor and you don't want to get another CD

its a noticeable difference - compiling for your architecture will also make it run faster and be more stable. I recommend a stage 1 install with manual kernel configuration - you are running amd 1900 - fast enough- you will have to wait for kde to compile anyways - just a suggestion.

I thought that the package CD came with a precompiled kde on it, which would take hardly any time to install

The difference should be noticable, but there are people who would argue that it's not (as well as a lot of people who argue that it runs much faster). There's no real disadvantage I can think of, so just go for the athlon version...
