any word on this situation yet? I tried getting a bootsplash using 2.6.9 gentoo sources with no luck. It appears all my settings are correct, but no luck. I get the same screen flash and a ton of evbug messages in my dmesg. _________________ I RTFM already, damnit, and the manual writer needs to be smacked. |

Hey all,
I have the same problem. I'm on an old iBook G3 300Mhz and try as I might, I just cannot get bootsplash to work. Anyone have any ideas at all?

It was a great solution for kernel 2.6.7-r9, but that kernel doesn't support all of my hardware. Or if it does I couldn't find the right stuff to turn on. I need at least a 2.6.8 or maybe 2.6.9.
Any chances that whatever got broken will be fixed? Or, has anyone had any luck getting it to work on a newer kernel? And would you be willing to post your .config if so? |

Ok, I tried really hard to get bootsplash working on my iBook... Without any success...
Anyhow, today I did a fresh install and I got gensplash working!
Kernel: 2.6.10-gentoo-r4Momo (haha, local version)
Video card: Radeon 7500
Just follow the instructions for gensplash , configure your kernel as suggested at the beggining of this thread, and in yaboot.conf add:
Code: | append="video=radeonfb:1024x768-8 splash=silent theme:emergence |
Note: Do not add the "initrd" line... It will end up in kernel panic
Of course:
Code: |
#ybin -v
#rc-update add splash default |
Enjoy! _________________ Le diable amoureux

Yeah, I have gensplash working on my TiBook as well. Except that I have the initrd line in my yaboot.conf file and it works fine for me.

I really don't know why it ended up in kernel panic... It was sth about not recognising root partition...
Anyhow, it's really great now!
Besides... You don't really need that line to make it work... _________________ Le diable amoureux |

Okay, I got gensplash working. I didn't like the default theme, so I used the images from the bootsplash theme for 'ThinkLinux'.
Now, my only question is, how do I specify what text is diaplayed on startup, reboot, and shutdown? Specifically I need to know what config values to put in the theme so that I can have a plain font instead of italics, and I'd like just the text "Starting" or "Rebooting" or "Shutting Down". |

To answer my own question, I found /etc/conf.d/splash. It contains the messages settings, the font settings, as well as a few other settings. |

I get gensplash working here, but the text fills the entire screen instead of staying inside the nice box like it does on my x86 boxes. Does anyone else have this problem? I suspect this is a Rage 128 problem or a Rage128/PPC problem, not a generic PPC one.
I haven't tried gensplash with the vesa framebuffer yet, but I might. The computer is a 350 MHz B/W G3.
http://rasmus.wiman.org/bilder/ragesplash.png is an example of how it looks. Note that the color corruption is an fbgrab issue and has nothing to do with gensplash. |

Ok, small bit of randomness, wonder if anyone's got any ideas:
I'm using gensplash on an iBook. It works, for a given value of "works".
In the yaboot.conf, if i have the initrd line in, then i get no silent splash screen, just regular white text, black background. Then around 95% through the boot process
i suddenly get the splash screen (the verbose one).
However, without the initrd line, after about 20% of the boot process (too long without splash screen for me!), i get the silent splash up. No progress bar.
This then briefly goes back to white text, black background, before setting the (verbose) splash screen.
I'm using
Code: |
video=radeonfb:1024x768-8 splash=silent theme:emergence
|
in yaboot.conf.
I'm guessing that this is just due to the fact that gensplash is not really fully working on PPC yet.
Any clues? _________________ "God doesn't play dice." - Einstein

I'm having the same issue, kernel-2.6.10-r6. Any resolution? |

No resolution as yet. I'm gonna have a play around with it, but it won't be for a while yet. Got a lot of uni work to do, exams coming up (grrrr).
I'm guessing though it's cause gensplash is not really all that great on ppc yet. I guess possibly it could be to do with the
radeon frame buffer though. _________________ "God doesn't play dice." - Einstein

For me, none of them works. Bootsplash and gensplash neither.
I tried both radeonfb and also aty128fb. The iBook is an Dual-USB 12" from 2002.
For trying gensplash the yaboot.conf looks like: Code: | initrd=/boot/fbsplash-emergence-1024x768
append="video=radeonfb:1024x768-8 splash=silent theme:emergence rootflags=data=writeback"
|
The kernel has:
Code: | CONFIG_FB=y
CONFIG_FB_RADEON=y
CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE=y
CONFIG_FB_SPLASH=y |
Just the splash script shows the grafical background.
The start procedure doesn't show any grafic.

gensplash exists
Has anyone got another theme working with gensplash? For me just default works: Code: | #plash_geninitramfs -v -g /boot/fbsplash-1024x768 -r 1024x768 default |
Code: | append="video=radeonfb:1024x768-32 splash=silent theme:default"
initrd=/boot/fbsplash-1024x768 |
If I build the ramdisk with theme gentoo and set theme:gentoo, no grafics load at boottime. Just terminal and shutdown are grafical.
I also tried to put all available themes into ramdisk, and also the theme livecd-2005.0.
Did anyone get bootsplash themes working with gensplash? There are a lot of them, and I would be interested in the Lila one.

I built it following the directions of
Code: | # splash_geninitramfs -v -g /boot/fbsplash-emergence-1024x768 -r 1024x768 emergence |
And when I reboot I just get the same screen I always get... Are you using an iBook by chance?
My dmesg does show:
Code: | radeonfb: Invalid ROM signature 0 should be 0xaa55 |

frameRATE, can you boot at all? or is that error as far as you get? I've seen that error before, although it didn't cause my boot to fail. something else did though. I solved it by booting into a live cd and reinstalling yaboot. I just ran
ybin -v
and that solved it.
As for fbsplash, what's the contents of your yaboot.conf? _________________ "God doesn't play dice." - Einstein

I can boot fine again, just had to update my yaboot. Now I'm at the stage where I get the normal bootup, no tux, just ugly text. Then at the end of the startup processes I see "Setting framebuffer console" and I get the ugly gentoo background.
My goal is just a black background for now with the same high res console I get in yaboo (same font/everything)
Suggestions? _________________

If you get the gentoo background then i guess the initrd is ok. Do you get a decent resolution too?
If you could post your yaboot.conf, that might be helpfull.
you should be able to get better than you're getting now, i'm running it on an ibook too. Although it's not what you'd call perfect yet. _________________ "God doesn't play dice." - Einstein

Well, is there a place I can set the font? And do you know the fonts size yaboot is using? _________________
