Hi, I'm a newbie. I've been trying to install Gentoo on my desktop for quite a while now, without success. I'm doing a stage1 install, and am having problems with bootstrap. In previous installations, I've been able to bootstrap fine, but not now.
Last time, I got errors (compile errors when emerging anything at all) that seemed to be associated with hardware failure in all similar cases I searched for, so I sent the computer to the shop that built it (since I know I don't know enough about hardware to be of any use), and they replaced the memory, but couldn't find anything else wrong with it.
I have a Pentium 4 ~2.6GHz processor, I think with hyperthreading (gkrellm and Fedora both seem to think I have two processors), 2GB RAM, 120GB on hdb (the drive I'm installing Gentoo on), and various other cards which don't seem relevant.
On bootstrap, things seem to go fine (several page-ups reveal nothing but 'yes' and 'ok' type responses for "checking" outputs), until very soon after it starts, it outputs:

Code:

make: *** No rules to make target `j3' . Stop.

!!! ERROR: sys-apps/sed-4.0.9 failed.
!!! Function src_compile, Line 27, Exitcode 2
!!! Shared build failed

I also tried changing make.conf to j2, because it commented on the j3ness of it, but that didn't work either; the same error came out, except it was with `j2' instead of j3.

Try changing "j2" to "-j2" in make.conf.

Thank you very much; bootstrap is now far beyond that point.
