syslog messages in dmesg and in file

I am trying to setup firewall logging and it works pretty good. But when I run dmesg I can see all firewall messages, while cat'ing /var/log/messages doesn't show them.
How can I setup my filtering in syslog so no firewall messages pollute my dmesg?
