emerge rsync... gives you that error?


    ERROR: out of memory in generate_sums
    rsync error: error allocating core memory buffers (code 22) at util.c(232)
    rsync error: received SIGUSR1 or SIGINT (code 20) at main.c(790)

    just do this
    mv /usr/portage /tmp
    emerge rsync
