Hi,

I have the feeling my dns on my linux workstation is very slow compared to a windows machine on the same home network. It takes a long time for mozilla to resolve names but when it is finally resolved loading of the page is fast.

I tried tracepath www.google.com and had the following message:
Code:
tracepath www.google.com
 1?: [LOCALHOST]     pmtu 1500
1:  b81129.upc-b.chello.nl (212.83.81.129)               197.563ms (This broken router returned corrupted payload)
 2:  atm11-0.hm00rt03.brain.upc.nl (212.142.18.33)        203.799ms
... snip ...

I can't imagine the error is in the chello router because my windows workstation does not have the problem of slow name resolving.

Does anyone have an idea how to investigate this some more?

Thanks in advance.

Perhaps you have an incorrect entry in /etc/resolv.conf.

This is my resolv.conf:
Code:
cat resolv.conf
nameserver 212.142.28.68
nameserver 62.108.1.69
search arnhem.chello.nl

How do i know this is incorrect?

I guess i'm getting this information from dhcp because this is how my provider works.

I have the same problem. However, it's not resolving names that takes a long time, it seems the packets get a lot of re-transmissions.

I did the tweak test on dslreports.com and it looks like it might be a problem with the MTU and even the MSS because the result looks different in windows. I recommend trying the same tweak test in both linux and windows and see the differences, work from there.

I get the same problem as well here. I have no found a solution yet. In windows everything is much faster without any re-transmissions or problems doing a tracepath.

I use a Linksys WRT54G router. I did not have the problem until I connected to the router.

Good luck.

If you are on a dhcp and it gives you DNS servers then you could try
Code:
dhcpcd
which will query for what DNS servers to use.

This is exactly what i'm using, and this is one of the results:
Code:
# grep -i dns /var/lib/dhcpc/dhcpcd-eth0.info
DNS=212.142.28.68,62.108.1.69
# cat /etc/resolv.conf
nameserver 212.142.28.68
nameserver 62.108.1.69
search arnhem.chello.nl

There must be some tool out there to test the time it takes just to resolve the name lookup and an indication of what is 'normal'. Is there anyone who knows?

you can use dig (it's in net-dns/bind-tools) to check the speed of a lookup. I just checked both your servers 1 gave 119ms the other 76ms to look up www.google.com. That sounds pretty normal, I'd check them from your machine, you can also download bind for windows and do the same test to see if the results are any different.

I tried dig www.google.com and got a reply in 25-30 seconds. I have noticed that the lookup is fast again for some days. Have been working on my local apache server and maybe that's got something to do with it because it's the only thing that has changed a lot.
Sorry i don't really know what caused the slow down.

I suggest adding the following lines to /etc/sysctl.conf and then restarting networking or rebooting:

# Disables TCPv4 timestamps
net.ipv4.tcp_timestamps = 0

It fixed the broken router and slow access/lookup problems for me.
