After having emerged -u world, messed up a bit the conf files by randomly typing numbers between 1 and 3 while running etc-update :lol: I can't get KDE to start automatically after boot time.

I've set up correctly the rc.conf file:
Code:

DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm"
XSESSION="kde-3.2.3"

But I still end up with an X window in which I have to type
Code:
startkde
in order to get kde to launch.

Does anyone sees something I missed to set up properly?
Any known bugs with kde 3.2.3?

Here is the output of
Code:
rc-update add xdm default

Code:
 * xdm already installed in runlevel default; skipping

:?

Except a bug I can't understand why my rc.conf would be bad....

Any thoughts???

I have the same problem with Gnome. After that I'll run rc-update del xdm default and when I repeat the rc-update add xdm default I end up with a terrible XFree login window which takes me to xterm, I think.
In xterm there's only a black screen and nearly nothing else to do except
logging out, or a system log and two other options.
Another frustrating thing is that when I manage to type gdm to get to the login screen the response is that only root wants to use gdm. I have to login as root.
Should I remove XFree and Gnome and install them again? By the way, what is xscreensaver good for?

Dunno about Gnome. I wouldn't install it again. This must be a config problem, just like me

Still do not have a clue how to get KDE start automatically... :?

Help!!

Well, I feel a bit foolish about this - but I just found out today from a site that you just have to remove the # from the lines

Displaymanager=gdm
and
Xsession=Gnome

I didn't realize all the time that # before these lines was preventing the rc to work :oops:

Here am I again :?

Since my last post a lot of things have changed on my machine, nearly all softwares have been upgraded, I have a newer kernel version, a nice wireless flat keyboard...but one thing stays the same: console login.

Well kdm starts, the chosen wallpaper is displayed, as well as the logos and names of the users etc... But as soon as I've typed my password and pressed on enter, the screen resolution changes and I need to login again this time in console mode and type again my password followed by startx to start my kde and x session again.

Any idea of what's happening?

I am reluctant to suggest this as it seems to obvious - but I have been driven crazy by obvious problems before...

Have you selected the right session type in kdm - it sounds like you have something other than kde selected and you are logging into some sort of window manager then launching kde from that.

Good try but I've already selected KDM as the login manager.
Thanks for the post anyway

Here is an extract of rc.conf:

Code:

# What display manager do you use ?  [ xdm | gdm | kdm | entrance ]
DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm"

# XSESSION is a new variable to control what window manager to start
# default with X if run with xdm, startx or xinit.  The default behavior
# is to look in /etc/X11/Sessions/ and run the script in matching the
# value that XSESSION is set to.  The support scripts are smart enough to
# look in all bin directories if it cant find a match in /etc/X11/Sessions/,
# so setting it to "enlightenment" can also work.  This is basically used
# as a way for the system admin to configure a default system wide WM,
# allthough it will work if the user export XSESSION in his .bash_profile, etc.
#
# NOTE:  1) this behaviour is overridden when a ~/.xinitrc exists, and startx
#           is called.
#        2) even if a ~/.xsession exist, if XSESSION can be resolved, it will
#           be executed rather than ~/.xsession, else KDM breaks ...
#
# Defaults depending on what you install currently include:
#
# Gnome - will start gnome-session
# kde-<version> - will start startkde (ex: kde-3.0.2)
# Xsession - will start a terminal and a few other nice apps

XSESSION="kde-3.2.3"

Another guess?

Still not solved... :x

I can login with kdm but I then it looks like kdm starts XWM instead of KDE because I have to type "startkde"..to start kde.

Note that XDM will lauch KDE automatically after login.

I've been browsing the web for a solution, saw a few problems related to runlevels, gdm, and rc.conf files, but I can't figure out what's wrong and how to fix it.
C'mon there should be someone knowing that.... :(

I've been waiting for a fix since July...yes, July.... :cry:

Thanks for your help!

I have the same problem. Everything works fine when I login as root, but when I login as a user, I am taken to an xterminal were I have to type startkde to get it KDE running.

The presence of an .xinitrc with "exec startkde" or "startkde" does not seem to make a difference.
