I started to install Gentoo in way of Handbook. Autor writes in section 4c about creating a boot, swap and root partition. Do I need create boot partition also? I have already
created /dev/hda1 - Linux, and /dev/hda3 - Linux Swap. But it seems to me, that is no neccessary to create solo boot partiotion, isn't it? Thx |

Most people will be fine without a boot partition, but some old BIOSes have a problem with booting large disks. So if you have an old computer you might want to make a small boot partition at the start of the drive, just to be safe.
Other than that I can't see any advantages about having a boot partition. Or perhaps that you seperate your kernels from the rest of the files (you don't even need to have the boot partition mounted, except for when updating your kernel), which will keep you from screwing up your kernels :p _________________ If you do something right once, someone will ask you to do it again. |
