I'm a big newb with SATA and having big problems. I know it's bios related, but i don't understand how to fix it. HArdware:
AMD64 on an MSI K8T-Neo FIS2R
1 IDE 60GB
1 SATA 120GB
Problem: WIll not boot from SATA, only the IDE. Currently the SATA drive is plugged into SATA1, the Via controlled port, but the result is the same if it's plugged into the SER1 slot, controlled by the promise controller. Windows setup does not recognize the drive, even with using the drivers provided on a floppy by MSI. Gentoo DOES recognize the drive, stragely enough as both sda and hdg. I can install gentoo fine on the SATA drive. but i can't boot to that drive. if i specify in my bios the boot order, the only SATA related option i have is BBS(RAID): 'drive sr number here'. It can't be a grub problem, because i'm not even getting there. Does anybody with that MOBO and an SATA drive know how to set this up right? the manual sucks. i really want gentoo back cuz windows annoys the hell outta me.

Yes, I managed that with something like this hardware. What I had to do was disconnect the IDE drive before installing GRUB so that it installs to the right place. And your SATA drive will be the "BBS(RAID): 'drive sr number here'" option. When GRUB is installed in the MBR, you can plug the IDE drive back in. _________________ No-one's more important than the earthworm. |

i use gento also on sata.
I can boot from sata when i choose SCSI as first boot deviece in BIOS.
I also have my old ide hd attached. Yr drive is recognised as hdg because of enabled scsi emulation in kernel.
Ur first BIOS boot hd is hd0 in grub, any other it finds are hd1 and so on.
So u can install grub in mbr of ur ide drive. And specify root elsewhere.
So if u boot from ide hd then:
Code: |
grub
root(hd1,0)
install(hd0)
|
The second line means second hd, first partition
and the second means "install grub in mbr of boot hd"
I hope this can help.

well, i solved it by cheating i went to seagate's website and downloaded discwizard and :POOF: all problems solved. it even copied the drive contents of my IDE drive over to the SATA drive. it also boots from the SATA, and i can ask it to boot to IDE when i want it to. thanks for the help, although i didn't use it
