|

Hi guys,
I have problems with the start-stop-daemon.
when I run /etc/init.d/<service> start and the process doesn't startup (this happens with both postfix and postgresql) it says OK to service started. and then when I try to stop it, that also goes fine (even though the service in fact, never started).. And now comes the real problem.
When I run /etc/init.d/<service> start after this, it doesn't start the service, it just prints out:
Warning service already started.
the pid file has been removed, and yet it keeps doing this - and it is only fixed by rebooting. Do you have any ideas as to how I can fix this, without having to reboot?
Thank you in advance. _________________ Best regards,

Hi Klavs.
I'm not sure about it but i thinks i encountered similar problems sometime ago.
Fixed it with an install from scratch
In the /mnt-directory there is a cache for the services. Cant be more precise cause i'm sitting in front of my ***-box at work. Anyway, investigate this service-cache. There should be entries for all of your services. Maybe the problem lies there. This cache is rebuild on startup which coincides with your observation that a reboot recreates a consistent state.

Thank you.
I created a symlink in /mnt/init.d/started to postgresql in the real init.d dir and voila I could now stop it..
WHAT THE HELL IS THIS CRAP???
Can anyone give me a good reason for this /mnt/.init.d "feature" aka. nonsense? I can't see any reason for it being there. I've never seen anything like it on other distros either. _________________ Best regards,

My pleasure.
Now, this is only an idea of mine. Maybe this is used to deteremine the services aktive on the system. But,.. sorry, have no real idea.
Maybe you should'nt call it crap just suboptimal feature, you know the moderators ...

Code: |
zap
Reset a service that is currently stopped, but still marked as started, to the stopped state. Basically for killing zombie services.

Its not the solution for your service not starting up, but at least it should fix the "Warning service already started." you mention. |

Thanks. I'll try next time the problem occurs
I hope someone could tell me why Gentoo needs this "feature"? _________________ Best regards,
