I was just wondering whether I should use the 2.4 or the 2.6 kernel. Which is better, and why?

Either one is fine. When in doubt, I usally the second-to-last release as it will probably be more stable. I picked 2.4 and have not experienced any problems, but 2.6 is probably good too.

2.6 kernels are faster than 2.4 kernels

I will probably just stick with the 2.4 kernel. I just thought that 2.6 might be better, since it's newer.

depends on what purpose the system serves for. if it is a server that relies on ur butt getting fired, then 2.4 is for you. if your only going to use for home use, then u should use 2.6

i prefer an 2.6 kernel it is very fast than kernel 2.4.....there is too much option than 2.4 i mean like sata etc.. (sata works with kernel2.4 but you should patch the kernel the 2.6 series have the patch i mean you don't need to patch them)....

There are quite a few kernels.. gentoo-sources, vanilla-sources, gaming-sources, etc...

On servers, I've been using gs-sources and have found them (2.4 tree) to be very stable.
On a desktop box, just the gentoo-sources 2.4 ones.. :)

If you're installing for desktop use, the 2.6 kernels are vastly improved compared to 2.4. Interactive responsiveness with low latency, especially under load, is greatly improved. That's what makes 2.6 feel "fast".

I'd try gentoo-dev-sources or ck-sources first if it was me.

Well now I am thinking about getting 2.6. Will it support my Sata HD ok, aswell as my USB wireless keyboard/mouse?

I have found several non-portage ebuilds, customizations and guides to lack support or information regarding the 2.6 kernels, but I also find that many of the things I used the guides and ebuilds to setup, are already integrated in the 2.6, making it easier (for me) to use. Alsa, for example, contrary to the Gentoo ALSA guide, required almost no emerging of drivers and very little setup to get sound working when using 2.6.

(But then, I am still somewhat new. What do I know?)

I have also used a wireless mouse and SATA Raptor and the 2.6 kernel with no issues.

Verted as far as a kernel I would go with 2.4 if I were you as all the docs are geared towords it and no affence but you have posted alot of problems up here, and I have replied to some, and it would prolly be easier on you to find information on 2.4 vs 2.6, but hey its completely your preference so have at it.
