My router is slow. Yeah, there's no other way to describe the problem. It works fine, it's configured properly, it recieves all the proper networking info via DHCP from the cable modem.. but it's REALLY slow and inconsistent :/
It's a Netgear RT314 router.. and it seems like it's been getting slower and slower all the time. In terms of numbers - I can DL sources from portage at around 400kbps with the modem directly pluged in.. With the router inbetween, it goes as low as 10kbps, and although sometimes it gets up in the hundreds, it usually stays below 50kbps.
Whenever I try to telnet to the router, I can make the connection just fine, of course, but it's very laggy.
I want to think there's nothing wrong with the configuration - how can there be? It -works-, other than being slow. DHCP takes care of everything, too. The latest firmware is also installed.
Is it possible for old pieces of hardware like this that are constantly powered to just... get too old to work well anymore? Or what else could be wrong with it? I have no idea =[ |

The problem could be one of the ethernet cables.

Naw, it's real laggy from all the machines..
It's been a good 5 or 6 years.. and the thing's been powered pretty much all that time. I suppose it's just time to get a new one. |
