When installing file systems, both partitions that are the largest on my machine, over 10 G, at the end of installing ext3, resulted in segmentation faults. They would not mount, saying the superblock was corrupted. On one occassion attempting to create an ext3 caused a kernel panic. My machine has
IWill MPX2 motherboard
Dual AMD MP 2200+
3 G RAM
2 WD 800JB HD
Subsequently used ext2 file systems on all partitions and this worked.
Anyone delt with this?

This problem turned out to be due to hardware. Some of the RAM memory was bad. The machine had 3 G of RAM. When 2 G was removed all problems went away and the install went flawlessly. The lesson is: if you are experiencing segmentation faults or general system crashes, look hard at the hardware, particularly memory.
P.S. This forum is great! I have found it to be an extremely rich source of help. Thanks to all who contribute.
