To put it simply:

gentoo-dev-sources is a vanilla 2.6 kernel with some patches to optmise it for Gentoo.

love-sources is a vanilla 2.6 kernel with Andrew Mortons mm-patchset on it (could be unstable), then with lots of new other patches (also possibly unstable) on top of the unstable base.

Love sources is not supported by Gentoo and it will either make your kernel VERY fast and work for your system (it uses requested patches for unsupported hardware) or will completley bork your system :D

A search will reveal a love-sources how-to thread somewhere.

Bleeding edge means just that - it is not necessarily stable, it uses the latest (and possibly unstable patches).

DO NOT ask the gentoo devs for support if it goes wrong, join us on #love-sources if you have a problem with it. (freenode)

love includes a lot of experimental/developmental code that has yet to be tested enough to be in the "proper" kernels.

It's not hugely stable, but it is fast, and has lots of features you don't find elsewhere.

All stuff from my usual config compiles. Personaly I never use LIRC, so it may be something I am doing, but I wanted to check about that "lirc working thing" and this is what I get:

This is fir LIRC-parallel module
Code:

  CC [M]  drivers/char/lirc/lirc_parallel.o
drivers/char/lirc/lirc_parallel.c: In function `lirc_parallel_init':
drivers/char/lirc/lirc_parallel.c:611: warning: implicit declaration of function `parport_enumerate'

This is fir LIRC-serial module comiles with this warning
Code:

  CC [M]  drivers/char/lirc/lirc_serial.o
drivers/char/lirc/lirc_serial.c:93:2: warning: #warning "Note: using rdtsc instruction"

This is fir LIRC-serial module comiles with this warning (dunno why it tells me serial port is compiled in, sinse I do have it as the module)
Code:

It has been with me forever, so it has nothing to do with this love. Like I sais i never use it,but someone may want to find it usefull and get those errors as well.

How can it be fixed

P.S. Going to reboot and see how other problems have been solved (bootsplash, alsa - xmms) 8)

Installing now.
You can only really call it lucky 7 when you get to 2.6.7-love77 or 2.7.7-love7 (eventually)

mkdir /usr/portage/sys-kernel/love-sources

cd /usr/portage/sys-kernel/love-sources
ebuild love-sources-2.6.7-r7.ebuild digest

- you create a directory for your ebuilds, usual place is /usr/local/portage
- specify this directory in your make.conf as PORTDIR_OVERLAY
- make a subdirectory sys-kernel/love-sources in above
- copy your ebuild there
- generate a digest
- emerge

Up and running here, but bootsplash doesn't seem to be working. I'm in the middle of a reinstall, so I can't really notice much difference, but it's good to be running love again. ;)

If you don't have a seperate directiry for your portage overlay, every time you emerge sync, your custom ebuilds will disappear.

Make sure you have a seperate directory, as dr_strange outlines above.

I'm having problems here.

I get panics and hangs compliling postfix of all things.

I needed some disk space. so I decided to move everything to my nice new and largely unused hard drive. I also decided this would be as good a time as any to migrate my root partition to R4 and, since nvidia now works with 4K stacks, I would enable 4K and register arguments.

Something tells me I may have been a bit ambitious with this one... :?
