I was wanting to make backups of my DVD's and wanting to know the best or easiest way of doing this. I have a NEC dvd burner. |

The good news is there's a forum topic on it hiding in "tips and tricks"--
<a href="https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=141710">here</a>.
Bad news is most pre-recorded DVDs are dual layer, and most DVD burners are single-layer. NEC now sells their 2510A and Newegg has it for pretty reasonably priced, so that's not as much of an issue, but I still haven't seen dual-layer media any cheaper than just buying another copy of the DVD yet.
So if it's single-layer, you're in good shape, if not, you'll need to re-compress the video to fit in half the space, which will lose quality.
