i am under the impression that my ntp-daemon does not quite work as advertised. here is the end of my ntpd.log
Code:
8 Jul 11:19:18 ntpd[8434]: frequency initialized 0.000 PPM from /var/lib/ntp/ntp.drift
 8 Jul 11:22:34 ntpd[8434]: synchronized to LOCAL(0), stratum=5
 8 Jul 11:22:34 ntpd[8434]: kernel time sync disabled 0041
 8 Jul 11:23:41 ntpd[8434]: kernel time sync enabled 0001
 8 Jul 18:31:17 ntpd[8434]: ntpd exiting on signal 15
8 Jul 17:31:03 ntpd[8498]: parent died before we finished, exiting
 8 Jul 17:31:09 ntpd[13931]: frequency initialized 0.000 PPM from /var/lib/ntp/ntp.drift

and here is my ntp.conf
Code:
# Name of the servers ntpd should sync with
# Please respect the access policy as stated by the responsible person.
server tick.fh-augsburg.de
server ntp.tuxfamily.net
server ntp.ndsoftwarenet.com

#local backup:
fudge 127.127.1.0 stratum 3
server 127.127.1.0

# you should not need to modify the following paths
logfile /var/log/ntpd.log
driftfile /var/lib/ntp/ntp.drift

# If you want to deny all machines (including your own)
# from accessing the NTP server, uncomment:
#
restrict default ignore
restrict 127.0.0.1

can anyone tell me what's wrong or give me an alternative to ntp (i feel it's cludgy and cumbersome to set up).

there were some issues with ntp. try using
Code:
restrict default noquery notrust nomodify

instead of your first restrict line
rest is ok
