Hello!
i have just got a intel 536ep modem with the ambient chipset, but when i install the driver that i downloaded from intel website. it tells me that there is a error that it couldn't identify out which distribution that i have( which is gentoo). and the installation just aborted and i couldn't figure out how should i set it up for gentoo linux.
Can anyone tell me how did you set up your modem to work? Thanks in advance. by the way, i am using kernel 2.4.20, that comes as the default kernel of gentoo 1.4. and the modem is a internal.

You might have to edit this file first: Intel536_inst

and/or

make sure the the char directory exists in: /lib/modules/KERNEL_VERSION/kernel/drivers

if it doesn't, create it, then install the driver again, if you get an error about bootscripts not getting installed, it doesn't matter, as long as the module is compiled and installed.

Add Intel536 to /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.4
Reboot
Check that /dev/536ep exists
Make a symbolic link:

Code:
#ln -s /dev/536ep /dev/ttyS0

then

Code:
#emerge -kv ppp
#emerge -kv wvdial
#touch /etc/wvdial.conf
#wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf

Then edit /etc/wvdial.conf to your needs.

Connect by

Code:
#wvdial

You might also have to edit /etc/ppp/pap-secrets and /etc/ppp/chap-secrets and possibly /etc/ppp/options.

Thanks, JinxterX!
But sorry to say this, i had just format my harddisk( including the gentoo side), because my computer had been infected by some kind of virus, and i decided to stop using linux, and get on with window, because i feel that it is too hard or i am not ready for it yet. And up to now, i have not found a suitable distro for myself yet. but thanks again after all, i will try this method if i ever lucky enough to get a resource that will teach me well on using Gentoo.

Oh thats a pity, Gentoo isn't that hard, you just have to do plenty of reading first and go through some trial and error, but it's worth it. I have Windows on another hd and I barely go back to it now. My 536ep is working perfectly now. Don't be put off, try Gentoo again, you'll learn alot about linux if you persist, the other distros are ok but it's hard to beat Gentoo.
