michelbehr,
You don't mount audio CDs. They are played (and copied) without ever being mounted. They don't have a filesystem like iso9660 data CDs. _________________ Regards,

Well, the thing is that when i used Slackware, on xmms, if i wanted to play some Audio CD track, all i'd do was go to /mnt/cdrom and all the tracks would be listed there... the thing is that i cant see any tracks now, nor in xmms nor ina a regular term... so i thought i should mount it...
Im lost here... how do i play an Audio CD track\\\ |

michelbehr,
Put the CD in the drive and launch the CD player of your choice.
It will depend on the analogue audio cable being connected from the drive to your sound card.
You will need to unmute the master volume and the right sound card input and set reasonable levels on the controls.
Only the control signals to spin the CD and change tracks are passed over the IDE cable.
You can also use digital audio extraction. A lot of CD players don't support this. Use xmms, configure it for digital audio extraction. Navigate to /mnt/cdrom and add the directory to the playlist.
You need to set pwm and master volume well up and unmuted.
Now all the commands are passed over the IDE bus as well as the audio data to the sound card. _________________ Regards,

Ok, im using xmms... if i do click "file" to open a file and go to /mnt/cdrom i cant see any of the audio tracks (but BEFORE i installed gentoo i could see the tracks)
Then i tried this: open DIR, and selected /mnt/cdrom then it opened all the tracks (i wasnt able to choose)
My question is very simple: is there a way I can access audio tracks\\\ |

michelbehr,
Configure xmms to use digital audio extraction
Code: | Options
->Preferences
->Audio I/O Plugins
->CD Audio Player
Click on Configure button |
On the device tab, enter the /dev/file for your CD-ROM and the directory where it is usually mounted.
Choose the Digital Audio Extraction radio button.
(Analogue may work, I've not tried.)
Save the settings.
Right click in the xmms playlist window and choose add from the context menu, then file from the submenu. In the popup window, navigate to the directory where the track is you want to play, e.g. /mnt/cdrom and choose a track. _________________ Regards,

I did exacly what u said... I even ran the "check disk"and it did read my CD drive:
Code: |
Device /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 OK
Disc has 10 tracks
Total Length: 37:44
Digital audio extraction test: OK
Directory /mnt/cdrom OK
|
However, when I try to navigate to /mnt/cdrom it doesnt work... At /mnt I can see "floppy" and "cdrom", but if try to enter "cdrom", it doesnt show me nothing, its like im still at mnt... Can u think in something else\\ |

Yeah, unfortunately, I seem to be having the same problem.
I also notice that a message pops up that says:

michelbehr,
It can take a good few seconds for the drive to spin up the CD. Wait at least 30 sec. _________________ Regards,

All I can say is that it works for me - Honest.
Have you tried as root, to check for permissions problems? _________________ Regards,

If you're using KDE (or have konqueror installed) take a look at
'audiocd://'; that'll bring up a nice virtual filesystem with cda, mp3, and ogg files for the tracks.

What permissions should the /mnt/cdrom be?
i have fstab set so cdrom is for 'users' but when i do ls -l /mnt i see cdrom has permissions root root

carpman,
The entry in fstab that says 'users' allows users to mount and unmount CDs. There is a subtle difference between 'users' and 'user' here. 'users' allows any user to mount/unmount, 'user' only allows the user who did the mount to unmount.
I was thinking more along the lines of permissions to do various things, rather than device pernissions. The permissions on /mnt/cdrom will vary, and don't matter anyway for audio CDs since they are never mounted.
e.g. have you got your users (and root) in the audio group ?
look in /etc/group _________________ Regards,

Instead of add file, try doing add directory, and selecting /mnt/cdrom. The add file way didn't work for me (it didnt show the tracks when I went to that directory), but the add directory way worked like a charm.
