i just started my first stage 1(2004.1), and after a few fits and starts(missing gcc-3.3.3, texinfo-4.5, binutils-2.14.90.0.7,
glibc, and an annoying symlink missing for 'virtual/libc'...) anyway, now that it's actually running, i was curious to know
how long
i should expect this to take? it's taken about 2.75 hours to get to zlib-1.1.4(where it's died again, and yes i have no broadband
see my sig for what i'm running...
p.s. are there supposed to be so many missing items in this release?

Are you using the gentoo handbook to guide you through the installation ?

All of the source code needed for a stage2 or stage1 installation is missing from the LiveCD. It is assumed that you want the very latest versions to be downloaded during installation. The LiveCD is setup so you can do a stage3 installation without needing to download anything.
It is possible to do a stage1 installation on dialup, but it requires quite a bit of patience because ~200MB of source code needs to be downloaded.
For reference, my Athlon XP 2500 bootstraps in right around 1 hour, not including download time. |

Bootstrap takes about 1.5 hours on my 2200XP and about 3 hours on my AMD 1.0GHz via broadband.
It really depends on your hardware and connection. |
