|
|
I've found a new chalange
Because we have 3 mailboxes with each 6 alliasses and have 3 computers at home I would like to centralize all the emails. This would also enable me to read my email on any computer on the network.
I already have the hardware, an old P1 wich already runs as fileserver, but I don't know what software I should use
Does anyone know what programs you can use to download email from POP-accounts and make them accessable via the lan? And is there a way the vieuwing of the messages can happen via a standard internet browser. (like hotmail)
The server should also be able to filter the messages for the different users so they can only view their own mails.
Any suggestions? _________________ "In a world without fences, who needs gates?" |

Hi,
1. fetchmail can collect your mail from several POP accounts and feed them to your local mailserver
2. If you like POP use popper. As for IMAP I'd recommend Cyrus or UW imapd
3. There are many webmailers around. I personally like imp -- well it's the only one I ever installed and used
4. If you want to run your own SMTP-Server you can choose from sendmail, exim, qmail, postfix... the list is nearly endless... all have their pros and cons. But for the unexperienced qmail might be a good bet.
And as you stated: installing all these apps can be challenging

I recommend the postfix/courier-imap combination that'll give you your MTA and pop3/imap and the ebuilds are very good, There are about 3-4 lines to change in the config for postfix and courier-imap works "out-of-the-box"
Use fetchmail to bring in the mail from your external accounts
For webmail, horde imp is probably better (they use it at my ISP and it looks good and works well) but I've never had much joy with the configuration so I use squirrelmail |

Thanks for the replies.
Someone I know recommended me the following setup:
Code: | Download mails: fetchmail of gotmail
prossessing of the mails: procmail
showing the mails: Squirelmail (or other IMAP server) |
Does this look good and where do i have to begin?
First time for everything... _________________ "In a world without fences, who needs gates?" |
