I had sound but now do not. I'm using kernel 2.6.7-gentoo-r7 which was recently installed. It isn't the modules because I can say
Code:
aplay /usr/kde/3.2/share/sounds/pop.wav
and I get
Quote:
Playing WAVE '/usr/kde/3.2/share/sounds/pop.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 44100 Hz, Mono
but without any sound. I have used alsamixer to unmute the Master and PCM channels. When I boot the machine I get beeps. I'm not sure how to proceed. Any ideas? Thanks.

You might want to check the Wave levels with ALSA Mixer. I've had trouble before because that setting was at zero...

Thank you for the response. I went through and unmuted everything that would unmute in the alsamixer, including all the Wave levels. Still no sound.

Hi,
i had to mute the channel "IEC958 Capture Monitor" to hear something.
Maybe this is specific to my on board sound (snd_via82xx) but its worth a try i think.

greetings,
rc

Whoops! My bad. I have 2 sound cards. Somehow in the process of re-compiling the kernel the wrong soundcard became the card to which sound was being played.

Lesson: if aplay tells you it has played correctly but you don't hear sound, check to be sure your speakers are plugged into the soundcard.
