When I was compiling various kernels, I know that I had problems with ALSA recognizing it but the OSS driver seemed to work fine, at least for the soundblaster16 driver.

It would be impossible to assist you unless you provide more information such as sound card, kernel version and what you have done thus far to assume your sound card is not detected.

First of all, I think alsa is much better then it used to be. I used to have a lot of trouble with it but since the introduction of 2.6 kernels it's worked like a snap for me every time. There seems to be a bit of a debate about whether or not you should compile it into the kernel or load it as a module. I find loading it as a module works fine and it gives you slightly more control over it this way plus it reduces your kernel file size ever so slightly.

That said, do you have a pci card or an onboard card? If an onboard, what type of mobo are you running. Chances are someone can provide you with a solution for your mobo.

man oss gets my vote until alsa can recognize my plain old sb16 card
(any of them for that matter, I've tried a couple.. sb16 w/ asp, w000 ! )

<</end drunken rant!>>

really? That's a shame. I think a lot of people have had a lot of people using onboard sound card chipsets have had a lot of success with using alsa.

Never the less, i'm sure alsa support will continue to get better.
I'm interested to know, how in fact oss sound quality compares to that of alsa.

well I'm compiling them directly into the kernel,
that might be part of it; I have this fear of modules for some reason
