During boot the machine hangs for over a minute, "bringing up eth0 via dhcp"
it gets past that and ifconfig shows and IP but I can't get out
I have to run dhcp -z then dhcp -n to regain internet access.
This also take about 70 seconds My windows machine on the same cable has no problem. Setting it to static is fast but I don't have control over modem, I am at work.

here is an ethereal capture during a renew

I have tried setting or not setting the gateway. It looks like the router is wanting to check before it re-issues the IP and gentoo doesn't replay and there is no-one else on at the moment, althought other times when ther are more people it still takes a long long time.

I am pulling my hair out! just an expression, that would take tweesers :-)

You could try the ISC dhcp instead of the default one. It's net-misc/dhcp.
