Init issues

Alright, I'm a bit stumped, so if any necessary info is missing, just say so because I dont know where to go from here.

As soo as init starts while linux is booting I get the error: Could not execute /sbin/rc

This happens with each kernel I have tried (gentoo 2.4.26, gentoo 2.6.7, vanilla 2.4.26, and vanilla 2.6.7)

i checked the permissions on /sbin/rc and nothing looks abnormal. I can open the file with nano (I haven't made any changes to it) when I'm looking at it using the live cd.

I'm baffled
