Hi!
I recently moved from gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.7-r8 to r10
Now it looks like Java is borken
Not even sure if it is the new kernel since i did som other updates at the same time.
But i saw people having the same problem with latest lovesources so i took a guess...
Anyone else have this problem and doues anyone know how to solve it?
When upgrading the kernel i tweaked it a bit. Amongst other things i enabled 4k stack an APIC |

nickeh,
I haven't heard about anything with Java lately, and I don't have -r10 installed on my machines (only at -r9), but I have heard of incidents where the 4k stacks are causing issues with other software, specifically the Nvidia binary drivers. Though I doubt the 4k stacks are your problem, I wouldn't discount it yet.
Have you tried one of the other versions of java yet? Which one are you using now?

nicke@egendomlig $ java-config -v
java version "1.4.1"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build Blackdown-1.4.1-01)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build Blackdown-1.4.1-01, mixed mode)
This is what i'm running now,
What are the alternatives? I really havn't gotten into java just emerged and it worked and i was happy |

You have several to pick from. They're all comparable, but political and ideological motives generally tend to favor one over the others with some people. For the most part, the only difference between the jdk and the jre is if you're just running java programs (jre), or you're developing them (jdk). Well, that, and the jdk is usually quite a bit larger as a download than the jre.
dev-java/blackdown-jdk or dev-java/blackdown-jre
dev-java/compaq-jdk or dev-java/compaq-jre
dev-java/ibm-jdk or dev-java/ibm-jre
dev-java/sun-jdk, dev-java/sun-j2ee, dev-java/sun-j2sdk or dev-java/sun-jre-bin
There's been some mailing list talk about kaffe replacing them all in the future, but we're not quite there yet.
There are several others that I'm not that familiar with. You'll need to read the ebuild comments to determine which are more suitable for your needs, from both usability and licensing.

I'm running blackdown 1.4.1 with gentoo-dev-2.6.7, and i never had a problem.
In fact, 4k stacks is supposed to increase performance of java (under heavy load), if you have a jvm that supports it. I've never used the sun jvm, but i heard that the new version supports 4k stacks. Try upgrading your sun jvm, or switch to blackdown. |
