Code:
*  app-arch/tar
      Latest version available: 1.14
      Latest version installed: 1.14
Size of downloaded files: 1,052 kB
      Homepage:    http://www.gnu.org/software/tar/
Description: Use this to try make tarballs :)
      License:     GPL-2

Everything has been fine and dandy since I installed Gentoo.
I have never been more pleased with a GNU/Linux distribution.

One month later I needed a package that was not in
portage. At least I could not find it: "hibernate-extensions".

In any event, when I attempted to unpack the package, I got an error:
Code:
tar: A lone zero block at 7229

Then I remembered (from a long, long time ago) when I used a
broken tar program. I got a similar error message. So maybe
I am using a broken tar again....

When I checked which version was installed on my (beloved)
Gentoo box, I saw that I was running a version I had never seen
before! Version 1.14. I had been accustomed to installing GNU tar
version 1.13.25 on all my Unix machines no matter what the flavor.

In fact, I moved the tgz file to a Linux box with 1.13.25, the
package decompressed and untarred without an error.

Anyway... not sure there is any problem here. Just reporting what
I saw happen. It seems odd that a more recent version of tar
would not handle the file but yet a previous version would work.
Is that odd or not?.

For the record, I was giving the z command, too: as in,
Code:
# tar zxf ../src/hibernate-extensions-2.1.2.tar.gz

Thanks much,
D

I downloaded hibernate-extensions and see the same tar problem as you. I also have tar 1.14 installed. Since the problem is reproducible you should should report it as a bug (bugs.gentoo.org). The dev will either fix it (if it is gentoo isuue) or report it upstream.

Also, are you sure that "A lone zero block" is actually error message and not just a warning? I have seen several times tar producing warnings while the result was OK.

I should always search my issues on Google first. eh?

http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-tar/2004-03/msg00026.html

and

http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-tar/2004-03/msg00018.html

Evidently, this is merely a warning and not a fatal data error. (as one
of the follow-up posters noted); in that, the data from the package
was unpacked correctly.
