ok I updated my kernel from 2.6.7-gentoo-r8 to 2.6.7-gentoo-r10
alsa was working (not pertectly but it was working I have an ATIIXP chipset)
after the rebuild I got a messege during boot saying "fatal module snd-atiixp not found"
so per the alsa guide i emerge alsa-driver and during the emerge it failed with "check alsa builtin yes" "error alsa builtin"
I built alsa as mod in the kernel
what can I do now? |

you do NOT need alsa-driver if you have properly configured alsa using the kernel drivers... the kernel drivers take the place of alsa-driver for 2.6.x kernels.
it sounds like you didn't build the correct module for your chipset in kernel config. |
