I am running xorg 6.8 on a ibook G4 and have been having the same problems. X freezes randomly and I can't get out to a command line. I can move the mouse. It seems like non-X processes are still running. I had these problems with 6.7 too. Firefox mighthave something to do with these problems. |

Ok this seems to affect diffrent hardware setup On my system GNOME is stable and doesn't lock up. KDE locks up a lot, gnome only locks up when I use sylpheed-claws. Mozilla works fine, but firefox causes X tp lock up. I have 2 GB RAM and 1 GB swap (which has never been touched).
When I ssh to the PC after the lockup X is using 100% CPU and is unkillable with -hup only -9 does the job.
So my list of applications that causes X to lock up
1. KDE (too random)
2. Sylpheed claws (when reading mail, if I leave it running alone it works fine)
3. Firefox (I gvae up trying)
My System:
2 x Opteron 244
2 GB Ram
Nvidia card (using X.org's nv drivers, nvidia drivers also experience the lock up)
Software:
gcc 3.4
X.org 6.8.0 (I thought 6.7 was causing the lock ups)
KDE 3.2.3
GNOME 2.6 _________________ Choose the right tools, use them the right way, refuse to compromise, expect to succeed, and then start again. |

I forgot to mention one other cause. Dragging an icon on the KDE desktop will allways cause X to lock up. |

For me dragging an icon doesnt lockup X. I ran memtest86 from the 2004.1 livecd and i didnt get any errors, so i doubt that it is a memory problem. _________________ Registered Linux User #360735. |

I also have the same problem. I am running xorg-6.8 and the latest nvidia drivers.
I had gotten the feeling that it is either firefox or thunderbird related before I stumbled onto this thread. The lock-ups seem to occur when changing to a desktop with firefox or thunderbird open under Gnome. These crashes started to appear after installing xorg-6.8.
I updated firefox and thunderbird to the latest versions this morning, and no freezes yet. X died on me three times yesterday _________________ ::feed my lotus flower seed:: |

hm.. i enabled hangcheck timer today, and i wondered if it was
possible to setup some hangcheck timer thingy which would poll
X, and if it no longer responded for a certain amount of time, it
would forcefully close X. |

In my BIOS I put my AGP to 4X. Hoep that will help. Also is there a way to tell teh nvidia driver to use 4x to that windoze can continue using 8x? _________________ Registered Linux User #360735. |

I switched back to xfree, I had similar problems and it was a pain in the butt, but I got it to work. Try going back to xfree, then do a revdep-rebuild. This will fix the xinerama problem. So far, I haven't had any lockups.... |

By off chance do you have 'renderaccel' enabled in xorg.conf?
I disabled it and have not had a hang yet. I also have not noticed any degradation in performance either. _________________ P4 2.8Ghz @ 2.8Ghz SL6WT

I was having this problem when ever I used firefox-bin on xorg but i recently compiled firefox myself and I've been up over 3days now with no lockups where the keyboard stops working.
I also have another problem where my screen corrupts and the system locks up hard I have to reboot. I think this on is a kenrel problem |

I was getting the following in /var/log/kernel/current:
Code: | Badness in pci_find_subsys at drivers/pci/search.c:167 |
Just looking through the kernel source search.c, I found some interesting things... (not sure if it's relevant or not, though)
Code: | /**
* pci_find_subsys - begin or continue searching for a PCI device by vendor/subvendor/device/subdevice id
* .....
* NOTE: Do not use this function anymore, use pci_get_subsys() instead, as
* the pci device returned by this function can disappear at any moment in
* time.
*/
|
So, perhaps someone is calling a function that is deprecated? Could this be maybe a udev issue as well (since I'm using udev here)? |

Sorry for posting so many times - just one more comment:
I've never had a crash while it was waiting for login at GDM. Could this mean that it's got something to do with an app instead of X??? |

Probably because I'm using metalog instead of syslog or syslog-ng. Hm.. If you were able to keep it in KDM for a while, that would mean it might not be X afterall... I'm starting to suspect nvidia's driver or gkrellm (since I didn't have firefox running when it crashed). I'll try it without gkrellm to see if it does the same crash (although it's completely random). |

I've got
Athlon XP 1500+
1G RAM, 2G swap
gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.8-r6
KDE-3.3.0
xfree-4.3-r4, xorg-x11-6.8.0-r1
nvidia-kernel-1.0.611-r2, nvidia-glx-1.0.6111
gkrellm-2.2.4
mozilla-firefox-bin-1.0_pre
GeForce3, GeForce Ultra 5700
Everything was working fine with xfree and my old GeForce 3 card. Then I moved to the 5700 to get dual head support. This is where the lockups started for me.
Mine is the variety where X freezes up, using 100% CPU, but the hardware mouse cursor still moves. Logging in remotely I can kill X and continue. Using strace before killing, it shows the X process is in a loop servicing SIGALMs.
Most of my lockups occur before KDE even starts to restore my desktop session, and sometimes at the kdm login prompt. Most often it is during the KDE splash screen.
My nvidia driver was already at the latest version. I've tried RenderAccel on/off, 24- 16- and 8-bit color, single/dual head. I tried a generic configuration generated by 'X -configure'. I've even had the same lockup using a failsafe session and starting icewm.
I was using xfree and tried switching to xorg. No change in behavior. I might try avoiding gkrellm and firefox, but I guess those are really just applications that happen to tickle this particular bug.
So far the only luck I've had is running in 8-bit mode (UGLY). I've got gkrellm and firefox running with no problem. This is the first time I have not had to switch back to the old card just to do more research online. But, of course, 8-bit color is just not acceptable. _________________ Ken Brunell |

My xorg also seems to randomly lockup. It seems to be when I'm switching between X servers and the screen will just go black. I cannot do anything with the keyboard and mouse doesn't seem to respond. I haven't tried sshing into my box and seeing if I can kill X but I will try it next time that I get a lockup. |

I have a new idea. This is basically a TOTAL guess, but I'm wondering if compiler flags have something to do with it.
I had compiled everything with default flags, then when I recompiled xfree on my laptop after following this thread I got one lockup again. It's not so bad. I've only had one in two weeks. After I went back to xfree (compiled with gcc 3.34 and default flags) on my desktop, I haven't had a single lockup and that machine has much older hardware.
What do you think? Anyone willing to try recompiling with no flags? _________________ My log saw what happened to Laura Palmer. Go ahead. Ask it. |

I am still having the random lockups. Its happening on my laptop, which is running gnome. However, the video card is a Mobility Radeon M6 LY. I do have the RenderAccel flag enabled in xorg.conf. I may try removing that. The strange thing is that only the keyboard dies out. The mouse is still functional.
Hope someone may be able to figure this out.

Still no go. I rebuilt my problematic box from scratch. Now it's more stable than before - but not stable in the word's true meaning.
But since then, it only seems to happen when switching virtual desktops - not 100% sure about that, really, but I *think* it was like that.
Still no clue. Happens on 2.6.7, 2.6.8, 2.6.9 with xorg and happened with xfree before. Varios combinations of [IO_]APIC on/off, kernel preemption did not yield anything truly different.
Mine is the kind of lockup where X takeds 99% CPU and the mouse usually still works, although it can freeze, too. ssh always seems to work, but I can't kill X (not even with -9) and usually *cannot* shut down cleanly. |
