I emerged baselayout and when i did etc-update i overwrote my old group file.

I am now unable to SU, and I imagine many other things are messed up now that I haven't discovered yet.

I knew that doing what I did was going to cause problems, yet I did it anyways. Maybe a built in self-destructive subconcious thingy.

Anyways, is there a way to restore my old group file, and if not how can I allow SU to work again?

Add your username to the wheels group and su should work again. Also, add yourself to the games group to play games.
p.s. you will need to logout afterwords for the cahnges to take affect. :)

ok, how do i add myself to the wheels group, and the games group.

Also how can i see what groups i belong to, without installing something like webmin?

As root do:
groups <user>
wheel audio games users in my case

to add user to wheel audio and games:
usermod -G wheel,audio,games <user>

Either that or just edit /etc/group.
