Securing SMTP

I would like to know what the recommended way to authorize SMTP users and allow ONLY authorized users to send email to ANY domain is in Gentoo?

SMTP-AUTH seems to be one of the most popular methods... POP-before-SMTP is another method, but I hate that since I'm an IMAP user.

Google for both of the above terms and you should get plenty of hits.
