I'm currently running Gentoo w/ KDE after throwing Gentoo on one day after I was bored. I want to format and reinstall Gentoo doing things with a little more thought. The first time I installed KDE I simply did:

Code:
emerge kde

But I found that it installs a whole bunch of stuff that I never use.

Of the following:
kdeaccessibility Accessibility related programs
kdebase Base KDE packages and necessities
kdeaddons Miscellaneous older/obsoleted KDE tools
kdeadmin Administrative KDE tools
kdeartwork Nice art themes for KDE
kdeedu Educational KDE tools
kdegames KDE games
kdegraphics KDE graphical art tools
kdemultimedia Multimedia players/framework for KDE
kdenetwork Network-related tools for KDE
kdepim KDE PIM tools, calendars, desktop notes etc.
kdesdk Code development tools
kdetoys Amusement tools for the KDE desktop
kdeutils Graphical system utilities
kde-i18n i18n language files - see note

Which would you recommend or which ones do I have to install?. I was thinking of only doing kdebase, kdeadmin, kdeartwork, kdenetwork, and kdeutils.

Do I need kde-i18n? If I dont install it will it default to english? Do I have to install kdemultimedia if I want to listen to MP3's, watch videos? (I never used any of the multimedia programs that came with KDE)

Thanks in advance.

With gentoo you absolutly do not have to reformat and start over. Just emerge -C any package you want to remove. BTW, I believe kdebase is necissary.

You can further streamline kde by using the DO_NOT_COMPILE use flag, so you get only what you need in those packages.

I was wondering the same thing, great thread guys. I choose gentoo as my next distro too try because I dont want 4 web browsers 6 graphical text editors and 15 audio players that ship with the major distros.
