Hey,
I'm buying an nforce2 mobo (NF7-S rev2.0) and an athlonxp 3000+ in a few days and was wondering about any problems and gotcha's I may encounter while trying to get everything to work.
If anyone can either tell me or point me to information on setting up pata/sata, the onboard audio and nic to work it'll be greatly appreciated. |

The onboard audio won't work correctly, it isnt fully supported in linux, no hardware mixing for example (you can't have quake 3 and xmms running in the same time). So use a sb live insted if you can.
As for the rest, I'm less sure, but the nic should work fine. I use only the ethernet one (module 3c59x) but not the nvidia one. And for the sata, I saw a nforce sata option in the last kernels. |

You can make the onboard audio function successfully with full duplex by using dmix. I can't find it off hand, but in the documentation tips and tricks forums there is a big thread on how to set up the intel8x0 sound module with alsa, and all the needed configs to make dmix work and digital out work etc.
Everything else is working great for me. I have a DFI NF2 ultra motherboard, and I have no troubles now. Running a 2.6.7-love-8 sources. The 2.6.7 kernel has built in support for the nforce net drivers(forcedeth and sometimes rtl-8139), audio drivers (ac97/intel8x0), Sata drivers , and nforce 2 motherboard controller. You shouldn't run into any trouble as long as you use a 2.6 kernel, 2.4 kernels are a bit rough when it comes to nforce support. _________________ KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!!!!! |

Even with dmix, I'm not sure that quake 3 and xmms can work in the same time. At least, I didn't manage to. I could only play 2 xmms in the same time with dmix, which isn't really useful :p
Even for the sound quality, my sb live of my 2nd computer seems to be a lot better. So a sb live + nforce 2 , and everything is fine. |

I have that exact mobo. The sound issue doesn't bother me too much because I usually don't use too many sound-making apps at the same time. For the onboard ethernet use forcedeth. _________________ Hoping to install Gentoo 2007.0 soon and rejoin the Linux world
