I just noticed an option for software raid in my kernel.
Can raid0 be set up on two different size disks using this software raid implementation? I have one 40gig and 1 60gig, both of which are 7200rpm (2mb cache).

I've done some searching around on the forums but couldn't find any decent HOWTO for seting up software raid0.

Can anybody clarify whether or not I can actually do it on two different size disks, Can I just create partitions the same size? I'm not sure.

Any clarifications, help and pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

HI, in fact the raid is make it with 2 partitions of your disks. This partitions may have the same size to work properly.

There is two greats posts:

Thank you. I did a lot of searching around for raid and didn't come up with much. After searching for 'software raid0' I came up with a great link (the first on you postedI think).

Anyway, it was all going smoothly. During the install did a hdparm test and got about 75-80mb/s up from 35mb/s. SO that was all good
Rebooted my system after install and it gives me some reiser.fsck problem. Asks me to control+D to login in read only or reboot.

Somebody in the other thread had exactly the same problem but I couldn't work out how to fix it.Any help?

sorry for the double post.
I have fixed this problem now. But have another one,

Firstly it sits at the 'Loading Grub 1.5' screen for a good 10-20 seconds.
Then takes another 5-10 seconds to actually bring up grub (with the purple grub splash).

Secondly, my raid set works fine. But udma is not enable so I only get about 5mb/s. I have tried setting it with hdparm but it says 'operation not permitted'.

I have tried passing a param on the kernel line in my grub file like 'ide0=autotune' and 'ide0=ata66'. This didn't work either.

UDMA 5 is enabled in my BIOS for both disks and yes I have the correct ide cables. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
