Now that i'm able to mount my cdrom, I've emerged xfree and gnome...

But when i'm typing startx, I want gnome to open and not X...

How can I do that?

I would recommend looking in the documentation section of the gentoo website. There is a document called Desktop Configuration guide. Follow it and it will work just as you want to. It has the stuff you need to edit in rc.conf also. The quick fix is change
Code:
XSESSION="GNOME"
in rc.conf. To have a graphical logon manager come up at boot change
Code:
DISPLAYMANAGER="GDM"
and it will bring up the GNOME logon. Type in:
Code:
rc-update add xdm default
This should get you where you want to be. Make sure that the above lines are uncommented also. Like I said though, print off or bookmark the Desktop Configuration Guide it does a thorough job of describing this.

rc-update add xdm default just makes the graphical login come up at boot instead a commandline. This just prevents you from having to type
Code:
GDM
at the commandline to start gnome. It will work fine without it, just more work.

I prefer booting into a TTY versus a graphical login manager. It makes fixing x problems quicker :)
