I have a queston about permissions of files in /sbin. For almost every file in that directory on my box, the permissions are as follows:

Code:
-rwxr-xr-x

Why should stuff like modprobe and rc-update have permissions to be "executed by others" (I mean should it not be only available to root?)?

"rc-update show" can be useful as a user...

you can't actually change anything though as it'll say "must be root"

there are all sorts of examples... /sbin/ifconfig is useful as a user just to see your ip.

I actually put /sbin in my main user's $PATH just for commands like those.

I've asked this question because I've just almost had a heart-attack after having launched chkrootkit. It showed that I have been infected by a suckit rootkit (it was something like "/sbin/init infected"). However, i think (no, I hope) it was a false alarm. I have unplugged my usb modem and rerun chkrootkit and it was still showing that i had been infected. Clueless, i was rerunning it several times more and suddenly it showed "Searching for Suckit rootkit ... nothing found". Is it possible that this alarm has been triggered by emerging some core component (glibc with nptl etc - I was doing an emerge -e system at that time)? (I had no services such as ssh or webserver running).
