When I boot into Gentoo I am given an error that reports that my Root block device is not found and asks me to specify it. I type in the location of root (/dev/hda4) and the system boots fine. Im trying to discover which file I need to tweek my setting in. So far I have tried specifying root in GRUB and checking my /etc/fstab. I used genkernel to build my gentoo-dev-sources kernel (2.6.7)

Thanks for the quick reply  . Unfortunately I cant seem to find my grub.conf!. I thought it was stored in /boot/grub/grub.conf and found nothing but a link (light blue colour) to boot which just creates an endless circle. Not sure if what I am having is acutally a grub problem because I select the correct image in the grub and that seems to work fine. Sorry for being a bit of a noob
