I hade some recent trouble emerge portage. I kept on getting errors saying that cp was skipping files during a build because the "file replaced while being copied". This happend even outside a build, just at the command prompt. This made me think that something was seriously wrong: since when does cp fail? The partition in question is a reiser drive.

I booted into the Gentoo liveCD and ran fsck.reiserfs. It said that there were corrupted files that needed to be fixed with a --rebuild-tree. Trusting the software I went ahead and did that. When I booted back into my system NOTHING worked. The init files wouldn't run because they were "invalid". A quick check revealed that each file was over 5TB!!! Obviously something is wrong.

I booted into a Koppix cd and mounted the drive..... and everything is fine..... the files are their normal size and I can 'cat' them just fine. I tried rebooting back into my normal setup, and the same problems happened.

I'm about ready to call this hard drive quits and buy another one (It's >2 years old and I've been meaning to try some new CFLAGS anyway...), but I want to be sure it's busted before I start another stage 1. Is there anything else I can do to fix/verify this drive? What other resources are available to me besides fsck.reiserfs??? Has anyone heard of reiser borking a partition before?

If you need any other info, such as make.conf configs, let me know, though I don't think it's relevant in this case...

Thanks!
