This is the first time I've ever did anything with linux.
I've read the manual about 60 times no joke. I've tried installing the 2004.1 livecd about 13 times, I told myself I wanted to do this all by myself w/o asking any questions...well hat didn't work to well. I've tried for 3 days now...It's time to get some help!!I'm using VMware to do it.
I'm using VMware to install.
The problem now is when I'm "untaring" the stage file it gets errors at the end. Then it says it timed out due to previous errors, which the manual says to ignore. Then when I go to chroot in, it doesnt let me saying there is no /bin/bash directory.
Any help would be greatly appreciated |

Sounds like the stage file is corrupted. Download it again. _________________ Military Commissions Act of 2006: http://tinyurl.com/jrcto

tar: ./usr/lib/locale/locale-archive: Wrote only 512 of 105240 bytes
tar: skipping to next header
./usr/lib/libltdl.so.0
./usr/lib/libltdl.a
tar: ./usr/lib/libltdl.a: Wrote only 0 of 10240 bytes
tar: skipping to next header
./usr/lib/libltdl.la
tar: ./usr/lib/libltdl.la :Wrote only 0 of 10240 bytes
./usr/lib/libcurses++.a
tar: .usr/lib/libcureses++.a: Wrote only 0 of 10240 bytes
are the errors it gives me at the end.
Funny thing is it worked the first time I did it and then I messed up later
in the install and now nothing works.
I even deleted the old virtual machine and made a new one.
I'm using the livecd which I burned onto a disk. So if it worked once...It shouldn't be corrupt. |

I'm also a linux newb, I'm have the identical problem. I have also sucessfully untared the stage 3 tarball (only once) which allowed me to chroot to my intallation. (yes I am using live cd)
Once I chrooted into my installtion I tried to mount my cdrom in order to install portage(from live cd) at which point it would not let me mount due to some message stateing that there was( no filesystem indentified) - or something like that - then I came back to the forum to get some answers. When I rebooted live cd I tried to "chroot" again(chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash) unsucessfully(no file or diretory /bin/bash).
I then untared stage 3 again thinking this would give me the directory ( /bin/bash ) so that I could chroot back into partitions. However it did't work.
Help! I'm completely out of ideas. |

Your stage tarball is not corrupt, this message from tar means you have run out of space.

The most common reason for this is : you forgot to mount your root partition.
This is a generic example
Code: | # mount /dev/hda3 /mnt/gentoo |
