PostPosted: Sun Jul 18, 2004 1:48 pm    Post subject: Keyboard and mouse freeze when starting XFree Reply with quote

I installed Gentoo on a Pentium2 300, 128MB RAM, STB Velocity Graphics card (has a nVidia riva RNT chip). I am using the 2.4.26-gentoo-kernel. I emerged the nividia-kernel and the nvidia-glx, an added the nivida.o to my modules.autoload, it is now beeing loaded when I boot the machine without an error. I did 'X -configure' an I also used an working XF86Config from another machine, both had the same effect. When I do 'startx' I get this ugly looking standard windowmanager, but the keyboard and the mouse are not reacting on anything. I can't even stop X by pressing <CTRL>, <ALT>, >BACKSPACE>.
The only thing I can do is login on from another machine via SSH as root an do a reboot. I do not think XFree locks up, because, in the terminalwindows on the ugly WM the 'system is going down for reboot'-message is displayed, and also the analog clock, displayed in the upper right corner is working. The XFee log is not helping me ether. I will attach the log an my XF86Config to this post.
I have no idea what the problem is, any help ist greatly appreciated.
Regards
Kolja

What mouse are you using? And does "cat /dev/mouse" say anything when you move the mouse?

cat /dev/mouse does not print anything on the screen
Or did you mean trying this while XFree ist running?
The mouse is a Logitec pilot whee mouse, connected via usb.

When detaching the mouse /var/log/messages states:
Code:

Jul 18 18:26:08 shiva usb.c: USB disconnect on device 00:09.0-1 address 2

When reataching it, it says:
Code:

Jul 18 18:27:47 shiva hub.c: new USB device 00:09.0-1, assigned address 3
Jul 18 18:27:47 shiva input: USB HID v1.10 Mouse [Logitech USB Mouse] on usb2:3.
0

Starting X without the mouse atached does not change anything.
Regards
Kolja

Does anything appear when you mouve the mouse while "cat /dev/usbmouse" and "cat /dev/psaux"?

Because _pehaps_ your link /dev/mouse points to /dev/misc/psaux which is your PS2 mouse. Which you don't have. So please have also a look for the link whereto it points.

This does not look good:

Code:

shiva root # ls /dev/u
urandom  usb
shiva root # ls /dev/u*
/dev/urandom

/dev/usb:
shiva root #

So that explains, why my mouse is not doing anything, but shouldn't the keyboard work?
I would guess it is a kernel configuration problem, isn't it? I compiled my kernel with support for USB human interface devices, isn't that enough?
I will try to change kernel settings for core input devices, but this might take a long time on that machine :o(

You need
USB support --->
<M> USB Human Interface Device (full HID) support
[*] HID input layer support

The rest should be choosen automagically. ;-) Am I right guessing you're also using an USB keyboard?

Recompiling the kernel worked, yay me!
No, I am not using a USB keyboard, but the Keyboard was fixed in the moment, the mouse started working, strange, but I am not complaining.
Now the last problem ist, that after I shutdown the X server my console is broken, there are only strange colored 'blobs' on the screen....
But I am much happyer now :o)

Try using a default console without framebuffer.

When I disable the framebuffer support everthing else works. I cna start my X with my choosen windowmanager, keyboard and mouse are working, and I can freely switch to the console, back to the WM and I can kill XFree without my console dieing.
Now I have to figure out what is wrong with the framebuffer, but I guess it is better to start a new thread with a matching subject for that problem.
Thanks for your help.

I use a framebuffer and a bootsplash and most of the time when I exit X windows all is well but sometimes the screen does get corrupted and the fonts are all garbage. You can still type but it is impossible to read. The colors also get messed up. At this point I usually either ignore the problem and go back into X or reboot and all is well again.
