system bell not ringing

I have a 2.6.7 gentoo-kernel and I am quite sure I missed some option that turns the system bell on. If anyone could tell me where I can find it, I'd be very happy !

I don't really think that's a kernel option!

set bell-type audible

Well, it's indeed an option.
Device Drivers -> Input device support -> Misc -> PC Speaker Support
