Greetings,
After having successfully installed gentoo on my workstation. I thought I'd give me server a try. That's about as far as I got.
When booting for the 1.4r3 install cd the last thing that is seen is
---scanning aic7xxx
After this the screen goes black never to be seen again.
The server in question has the following:
2x Xeon 550
Perc2/SC (America Megatrends version)
Onboard Adaptec 7890 7860 7870
SCSI CDROM
etc..
I've tried booting with the 'NOSCSI' option however this leaves me with no way to extract the tarball.
On other distros such as debian there is an option "aic7xxx=noprobe" which seems to work. I tried this on gentoo to no avail.
Anybody know a way around this?
thanks,

If you already have a Linux running on that box you might trying Installing from a different Linux
This is a much more comfy way to install because you can use X windows and Xemacs and all of your standard tools from the get-go. |

Hey there,
Not a sure thing but I had similar difficulties installing on my DELL rack servers until I updated the BIOS's to the latest releases from DELL.
Good Luck |

i've tried a couple of more things
gentoo nousb doscsi
this works
so it looks like it is when i try to insall with 2.6 Kernel with support for multiple CPUs (smp)
i have 3 processors in there with a blanking plate in the the 4th slot
should i only have put 2 processors in ? |

Since this https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=90201&highlight= doesn't work anymore.
Use Knoppix 3.6
Boot the expert26 kernel without any parameters.
My server would not boot completely with any other kernel or combination of parameters from this CD.
When it asks you which modules to install enter
Code: | aic7xxx_CAUTION.o megaraid_CAUTION.o |
Answer remaining questions to suit your needs.
Now follow installation instructions.
This worked on a
Dell PowerEdge 6350
4 x 500 Mhz
1 Gig
CD-ROM attached to Adaptec controller
3 x 9 Gig disks (Raid 5) attached to Megaraid controller |
