Ok well today I decided I wanted to try gentoo (woo!).... but when I got into the network card installation nothing worked. The network card eth0 is recoginized but I cant set it up succesfully. I dont know, i think it might be that it has the wrong driver for the card.

The computer is a HP Pavilion 725n.
It has a 10/100 base T netowrk card (whatever that is)

so anyway i'm going insane.

Any help would be very well appricaited,

Mimi

Which driver are you using? If you type
Code:
modprobe

is it in the list? What exactly are you trying to do? Are you getting any informative error messages? What message do you get if you type
Code:
ifconfig eth0

?

See the problem is that I dont know what driver I need..... there is the big list and i have no idea which one to choose. How would I figure out which one to choose?

Also when i do an ifconfig it says the link uncap is unspec, which i am almost positive shouldnt be. This is leading me to the conclusion that gentoo has given my card the wrong driver. I know that the driver is in exsistence beacuse when I boot up into knoppix everthing auto detects and recognizes and bingo it works....

I am really confused .

Please help,

if you boot from the cd and use
Code:
lspci | grep Eth
it will tell you want chipset you are using. You can then search in this forum or google it to see what the appropriate module is.

If you post the output of the above here we will try to help you find the correct module to use.
