Heres a dumb question. Just emerged the new KDE beta. How do I start it? I typed 'startx' like normal and got my old kde. What variable do I change to start the beta automatically?

You have to change the ~/.xinitrc file to reflect the new path to kde 3.3 (I assume you were using 3.2 so far):

Is it just me or doesn't Autostart work anymore n beta2? I mean I have put a link to gkrellm2 into ~kde/Autostart/ but upon start kde asks me with which programm to open that link?

It's the window moving behavior. Go into that from a right click on the title bar and under moving select "Allow moving and resizing of maximized windows". That should get you going again. I had the same problem when I was trying Konqueror out.

I emerged kdebase-3.3.0_beta2.ebuild OK, but now would like to emerge the entire kdebase-3.3.0_beta2 package. What command would I use to do that? If it's necessary to emerge components separately, should I follow a particular sequence?

I have beta2 up and running. Seems to be a bit faster on my box 8) I do have one problem tho. Fo some reason kopete seemes to have no plugins, any suggestions

Memory usage seems ok, haven't noticed anything draining the system. All the kde items running are lower on the list than X, thunderbird, and firefox for me. Kopete is using the most memory at about 76,000 for me with profiles for yahoo, msn, jabber, icq, and 2 aim accounts all connected. The other memory using kde things seem to use from 20,000 to 35,000 for artsd. These are the numbers from KDE System Guard - VmSize column.


I also have the missing kdegraphics ebuild. It must of got pulled or lost in cvs somewhere.

Do we know what happened to the kdegraphics-3.3.0_beta2 ebuild?
If i install kdegraphics-3.3.0_beta1 it wants to downgrade kdebase,kdelibs and somthing else to 3.3.0_beta1 :(

Did anyone get kget to work? It crashes on my when I try to start it since beta1 with the following error message that doesn't really help me much:

ERROR: Communication problem with kget, it probably crashed.


And I'm also missing the kdegraphics ebuild for beta2.

Same problem with kget and nobody knows what happened with kdegraphics ebuild?

To install the missing kdegraphics package just do the following:

cp ./kdegraphics-3.3.0_beta1.ebuild /usr/local/portage/kde-base/kdegraphics/kdegraphics-3.3.0_beta2.ebuild
ebuild /usr/local/portage/kde-base/kdegraphics/kdegraphics-3.3.0_beta2.ebuild digest
mkdir -p /etc/portage
echo '=kde-base/kdegraphics-3.3.0_beta2 ~x86' >> /etc/portage/package.keywords


The missing package has already been reported as a bug:

Just installed it, and stumbled on a bug right away.

You should temporarily change your "home-shortcuts" (on the desktop/panel) to use the command "kfmclient openURL" rather than the default "kfmclient openProfile filemanagement", if you want to avoid this bug.

I get another error when emerging kde-3.3.0-beta2.

All packages compile fine but kdeartwork.
It is missing arts-header files that I could NOT find in the whole arts-sources-tarball.
So it's kind of strange that kdeartwork expects these headers to be installed.

I have also still installed KDE-3.2.3, which has these header files installed in /usr/kde/3.2/include/arts.
But when I look in /usr/kde/3.3/include/arts, the above mentioned files are not there.
As I said, they are also not included in the tarball of arts at all.

I tried re-emerging arts which changed nothing.

So I'm kind of confused what is wrong.

kdeartwork broken? arts broken? My harddisc eating these files to mock me? A black hole sucking exactly these header files in (you don't know what's special about them... maybe they taste good to black holes!) ?

I had a compile problem with kdemultmedia, turned out that I had not installed arts from beta2 (I have no idea why it was not required as a dependency). Reemerged arts, kdelibs and kdebase and then kdemultimedia installed fine (reemering arts alone was not sufficient). But that probably won't help you very much...

EDIT: I had the "-arts" USE flag in make.conf, had to remove it. I guess, with that flag, arts is not installed even though it's required to compile kdemultiedia.

Either something like that, or it's that black hole. I've heard weird things happen to people if they enrage the almighty Larry the Cow.

Do you have arts in your USE flags? These files are provided by kdelibs. Try recompiling kdelibs with arts in your USE variable.

Ok, I've just finished installing beta2 and everything seems fine, I've found two problems.

The first one is something that annoys me a lot and I'm not sure if it's a bug or a "feature".
I use to have a lot of image files in my desktop, and normally I see the previews in little thumbs. But it happens that I'm lazy when I save these files and never add the ".jpg" at the end. KDE would recognize my files without problems as jpgs and display the thumbs anyway. Now it doesn't happen and I have a lot of "unknown" file types un my desktop. I really liked the old way, any solutions?, how should I report this?

The second one is that if I have the gaim main window, with my contacts and I double click on someone to send him a message, the window that opens is the exact same size that the original gaim main window, and no matter if I move it and resize it to it's correct size, the next time will happen the same.

Not sure about #1, #2 is your "Special Window Settings" settings. They took away the "Save window settings" and gave the user some pretty in depth control of the way the windows act when you open them. Just right click the title bar and you'll see it under Advanced. There's probably some setting for gaim that carried over from 3.2.
