creating a linux ram disk image

We are working on a linux line card which doesnot have a hard disk. At present we are working by having the root file system on a NFS mounted directory. This becomes a problem when the NFS directory is changed or when the nfs server goes down or when the connectivity to nfs server is lost.

We would like to have an integrated image which when loaded on the board, should bring up the root directory sructure on the ram disk with the required modules. At present only the kernel image is loaded on the card. How should I go about doing it?
