How do you make a hard drive on Thinkpad T41 to become idle if no activity?
I have ACPI, CPUFREQD compiled into the kernel and started as modules on start-up. Is there other thing I need to do? I never touched their configuration files, though.
And other thing, the fan seems to not want to shutdown after a "shutdown", I have to hold down the power button for several seconds before everything really powers down.
Any ideas? |

Use laptop-mode, it's included in recent kernels (>= 2.6.6 and 2.4.?). The init script is not yet in portage, but you can get it from Bug 45593. You can have a look at the guide in my sig for some more ideas.

Disable APIC (!=ACPI) in the kernel config. Adding "noapic" as kernel parameter should do the job, too. _________________ KDE |

You can use ACPI with no problems (I am) but you have to disable 'Local APIC support on uniprocessors' in the kernel for proper shutdown.
also check out this and i think it talks about an app called cpudyn that can power off the hd after inactivity.
[edit] oops! i linked the same article Earthwings was referring to. |

Ok, I think this is a little off the topic, but after I config the kernel can I get rid of the original /usr/src/linux directory? I saved the new config (I guess) in the /usr/src/linux-2.6.7-gentoo-r9 directory after I compiled in the new stuff you told me to.
On with the Power management stuff. I installed cpudyn, but seems to get any result with the drive being idling and stop spinning. Maybe I should edit the config file. Will see.
I haven't look into the Laptop-mode stuff yet. Looks kinna intimidating, but not impossible. Will see, also. |
