This is a new installation, I was just copying a small image file from the BPFTP server running on my windows XP machine to my gentoo machine using wget, I also tried ncftp. The speed of the transfer starts at about 1kb/sec and quickly(with in a few seconds) decreases to less than 30b/sec, I left the transfer going over night and it did actually work, just incredibly slowly. Now, as if this isn't strange enough, the internet works fine over the same interface, it maxes the connection (about 54k/sec, 512k dsl).
I have a kind of strange physical setup for the network, due to lack of resources, but I have tested it and it doesn't seem to be a problem with the hardware.
I basically have a router and three xp computers connected to a hub, the windows machine running the FTP server has two network cards, one goes to the hub, and the other to the gentoo machine. The two network cards are bridged, however, I tried unbridging them and copying the same file, and I got exactly the same result. Connecting from one of the other windows machines, I can copy the file instantly.
I haven't altered any network settings other than to set DHCP, I have searched these forums extensively and can't find any solution. |

I had that exact same problem copying from a winXP BPFTP, even copying from windows shares. I ended up doing nothing about it because obviously its a problem with winXP .. |

I need to be able to use the network between these two computers so I can't really do nothing about it. It seems a strange problem, there must be some way to fix it. |

have you tried a different ftp server.
If you run XP Pro then there is one included on the CD or try fileziller which is opensource. |

I've just installed samba and I can copy from gentoo to any xp machine fine, but copying from an xp machine to gentoo goes extremely slow. This occurs regardless of the machine I initiate the transfer on. |

I think I have the same problem.
When I updated my kernel from 2.6.7-mm4 to 2.6.7-mm6, my upload speed from a XP client to the Gentoo box was about 40 kB/sec. When I booted the 2.6.7-mm4 kernel again, my upload was normal again (25 MB/sec.)
I thought it was a problem with the kernel/driver (e1000), but i could find (almost) nothing on the matter anywhere on the net.
I have found that at sometime the 2.6.x kernel had a problem with the combination of the e1000 driver and the ip_conntrack module which resulted in the same behavior.
I still haven't fixed it. I just keep using the 2.6.7-mm4 kernel, because the problem persists with 2.6.7-mm6

Hmm, well I'm using the gentoo-sources 2.4.26 kernel, so maybe it's something else, I'm reasonably new to linux/gentoo, so I'm not really sure what things to try.
The fact that it doesn't seem to have a problem with internet traffic makes me think it's something to do with protocols or software. |
