I have the same problem. I have no solution though, so I guess I'm no help. My friend might be able to find out what the problem is, but he's not so interested in games. Just wanted to let you know that you're not alone.
btw, this is my first post on any forum in my entire life. _________________ I use a 33.6kbps dial up connection.

I was just about to post that it it might be a gcc 3.2 problem but somone got to it before me. One of the latests posts on the Abuse sdl website says that the source was fixed for gcc 3.0. I tried recompiling using the non gcc 3.2 specific cpu flags but the game gives the same error. I tried compiling manually. I also tried using the frabs data files and the game segfaulted. I haven't tried using the shareware data files though. I could try that.
I guess it could be a use variable.
For my last compile, this is what I had in make.conf:
USE="X gtk -alsa mmx 3dnow cups dga opengl xv fbcon directfb qt qtmt
xfs -kde -arts tcltk aalib imlib ncurses sdl svga gif jpeg avi mpeg
quicktime oss xmms flash encode ggz spell truetype libg++"
CHOST="i586-pc-linux-gnu"
CFLAGS="-mcpu=k6 -O3 -pipe"
I used to have:
CFLAGS="-march=k6-2 -03 -pipe" _________________ I use a 33.6kbps dial up connection.

I sent an e-mail to Anthony Kruize, the programmer of SDL Abuse and this is what he said:
Quote: |
The BOSS_ANT error is known and is the reason I haven't released a new
version ov abuse-sdl as I'd like to fix it.
Unfortunately I am unable to reproduce the error which makes it very
difficult to track down.
I have someone who can reproduce it and is working on tracking it down
for me.
For now here's a workaround that should fix it, however be aware that
it will most likely cause other problems(specifically, lifts will no
longer work, basically making the game unplayable anyway), but it might
work ok for you, can't hurt to try anyway :)
Try moving the "register" directory into the "lisp" directory. This
should fix the BOSS_ANT problem.
Please remember, it's not a proper solution and just a hack, and
probably will break other parts of the game.
As for network support.
I had a quick play with it when I first started porting abuse to SDL,
but encountered the same problem you have.
I did manage to get a server running and clients could find the server
but then the server locked up when the clients tried to connect.
I decided to spend more time fixing up the single player instead of
focusing on the network code and haven't had a chance or urge to get
back to it.
Even if it did work it would only be usable over a LAN and not the
internet(unless you had an extremely low ping to the server). The game
engine just isn't designed to handle any latency and would require a
rewrite to do so.
However, if you or anyone for that matter would like to tackle the
network code, I'll be more than glad to work with them in getting it
running.
Hope that helps.
The next release of Abuse-SDL will have a proper fix for the BOSS_ANT
problem I hope.
Anthony
