|
|
So I just installed the system and a few second after it gave me the login prompt, it would automatically reboot itself. I narrowed it down to a bootloader problem and realized that I'd used /dev/hdb3 instead of /dev/ram0 for the root device (i used genkernel for the kernel config). The thing is, at one point, before modifying that, I was able to startup the system once and I installed gnome.
Now, I have all that as the preamble to the actual problem:
Not only would the system keep rebooting itself before I modified lilo.conf accordingly, but there were 3-4 modules that failed to load. the modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.4.25.conf and modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6.25.conf both had e100 and nvidia as entries to autoload at startup. And they did, however after the Starting PCI Hotplugging message at boot hw_random, emu10k1, and two other modules would fail to load. I was reading a forum topic and one guy said he moved the hw_random module to modules.autoload.d and if fixed his problem. I copied the file there and rebooted.
Whole new error. Now, e100 and nvidia would not load but I was not prompted about the other several modules failing. I thought this was curious and removed the hw_random module from modules.autoload.d and rebooted. e100 and nvidia still failed to load and it no longer prompted about hw_random, emu10k1 and others. I was confused. I ran modules-update since it said there was an error in kernel-2.4.25. Even after this, the error persisted and I can't get it to boot right. I'm still able to insmod e100 and nvidia after boot.
Cheers! |

Did you re-emerge nvidia and emu10k1 after your last kernel update ? All modules are kernel version specific, and you should always recompile them after a kernel update. Also check that your /usr/src/linux symlink points to the correct directory. |

I didn't update the kernel, this was the first installation. I'll have to check that symlink when I get back home though, on the job now. |

The link seemed to be correct. I recompiled a kernel using make menuconfig this time instead of genkernel and went through and disabled some of the kernel features I don't need. I noticed that there is an ERZ option in the kernel pertaining to modules. It is enabled. Was in the past as well. Also, when I try to insmod emu10k1 for my soundcard, I get this:

It did that before the new kernel. Also when i try to insmod nvidia I get a warning saying that it would taint the kernel.
Currently, no modules appear under lsmod at startup. So I take that as no modules are loading at startup. ANy help?? |

That's OK. When I load ATI drivers they say the same. It just means that you are using closed-source drivers. _________________ 60s: sex, drugs, rock'n'roll
