It's actually a bit more complicated since I have 2 3ware 9500S-4LP controllers which means I have to use the drivers either from the mm series of kernels or from 3ware's site.
Anyways, grub says it loads the kernel alright but I get some text flying by and a weird video mode change and then everything freezes. Reset is blocked as are the sysrq keys.
I'll be picking up a null modem cable to check things out via serial port but I'd really appreciate the .config from somebody with the same motherboard using the gentoo-dev-sources. Or, alternately, someone confirming that they needed to use a different kernel series/version.
Thanks in advance!

Thanks -- please send it to me via private message. I'll also send you my email address if you prefer that.
The reason I specified the K8S is because the K8W people have their stuff configured w/ AGP and stuff specific to their graphics card, which *might* be part of my problem.
Please send your boot parameters too -- I've been reading about people disabling APIC and ACPI routing for PCI. |

Thanks to everyone who helped -- the machine is up and running now.
key lessons:
- the Boot Logo vs Bootsplash incompatibility is annoying
- watch out for /dev/scsi/host? jumping around between the LiveCD boot-up and driver insmod, versus the actual boot of the system where the driver is embedded in the kernel |
