Advice needed on nForce-Boards

Greetings!

I am tempted to buy a nForce based Barebone(Shuttle SN45G), but I have major concerns about using non-free code for core-parts of the system. It's Linux after all.

AFAIK there is forcedeth for the networking and sound works with ALSA(w/o Hardware-Mixing). Do these Tools suffice or do I still need proprietary Software to get the System work?
Would you recommend nForce-based-Boards for (Gentoo)Linux or should I use something else?
Opinions please.

you don't have to use any proprietary code from nvidia to make your mobo fully work. i have a nforce2 based mobo and i don't use anything from nvidia except for the graphics card. everything works like a charm

I have a similar barebones unit from Soltek, and it works fine with forcedeth, alsa and nVidia's drivers.

I do advise you to get a separate sound card though, as the lack of 5.1 and no hardware mixing gets real old real fast with the nForce soundcards.
